Tianjin Emerson Metal delivers CNC laser cutting and integrated fabrication services for 420 martensitic stainless steel sheet and plate. Grade 420 occupies a distinctive position in the stainless family as a hardenable chromium steel that trades maximum corrosion resistance for excellent wear properties and heat-treatable hardness. In its annealed condition, it offers sufficient ductility for clean laser cutting and moderate forming; after quenching and tempering, it achieves a practical hardness range of 50–55 HRC—ideal for cutlery blanks, mold tooling, pump shafts, and valve trim where abrasion resistance matters more than exposure to aggressive chemicals.
Our production flow is tailored to 420’s metallurgical behavior: we laser cut in the soft annealed state, then—when your design requires it—coordinate precision heat treatment, grinding, and surface finishing to deliver components that are dimensionally stable and ready for hard-use applications.

420 stainless steel is a martensitic stainless steel, belonging to the high carbon grade. Under hardening conditions, it has good resistance to the atmosphere, certain wear resistance and corrosion resistance, and high hardness. It is suitable for various precision machinery, bearings, electrical equipment, instruments, meters, transportation vehicles, household appliances, as well as food utensils, stainless steel hospital equipment, etc. 420 stainless steel tested according to GB4806.9-2016 national food safety standards can meet food grade standards.
Fabrication Capabilities for Hardenable Stainless
Annealed-State Laser Cutting: We cut 420 exclusively in the annealed condition using nitrogen assist. This prevents edge hardening, micro-cracking, and the thermal distortion that would occur if attempting to laser cut already-hardened plate.
Post-Cut Heat Treatment: In-house or partner-facility quenching and tempering to transform laser-cut blanks into wear-resistant finished components. We control distortion through fixture-hardening and low-temperature tempering cycles.
Precision Grinding & Machining: Post-hardening surface grinding, cylindrical grinding, and CNC machining using CBN and ceramic tooling to achieve final dimensions on heat-treated parts.
Limited Welding Support: 420 can be welded with preheat to 300°C and immediate post-weld tempering, but we generally recommend mechanical fastening, brazing, or designing for one-piece laser-cut profiles to avoid HAZ cracking.
Surface Finishing: Passivation to remove free iron, mirror polishing for cosmetic blades, and satin finishing for industrial tooling.
