Q1: What does the "JR" designation mean in S275JR?
A: "JR" indicates that the steel has been impact tested at room temperature (+20°C) and meets a minimum Charpy V-notch energy of 27 Joules. This guarantees a minimum level of toughness for structural applications, distinguishing it from non-impact-tested grades like S235JR in certain specifications.
Q2: Is S275JR laser cutting suitable for load-bearing welded structures?
A: Yes. S275JR is specifically designed for welded construction. Our nitrogen-assisted laser cutting produces minimal heat-affected zone (HAZ) hardening, so cut edges retain excellent weldability using standard GMAW, FCAW, or SMAW processes without preheat in most thicknesses up to 25mm.
Q3: How does S275JR compare to Q355B or S355JR for laser-cut parts?
A: S275JR offers lower yield strength (275 MPa vs. 355 MPa) but superior cold formability and lower cost. For general brackets, base plates, and non-critical framing, S275JR is the economical choice. If your design requires higher strength-to-weight ratio or reduced plate thickness, S355JR or Q355B may be more appropriate.
Q4: Can you supply S275JR plate with shot blasting and primer before laser cutting?
A: We generally laser cut from black or pickled hot rolled plate and apply primer after cutting to ensure coating covers the cut edges. However, if you require pre-primed plate cutting, we can arrange specialized low-fume cutting parameters. Post-cut shot blasting and priming is our standard recommendation.
Q5: What thickness of S275JR plate is most economical for laser cutting?
A: Fiber laser cutting of S275JR is highly efficient in the 3mm to 20mm range, offering the best balance of cutting speed, edge quality, and cost. Above 25mm, cutting speed decreases and gas consumption increases, though quality remains acceptable up to 40mm. We can advise on thickness optimization for your specific design loads.
Q6: Do you provide EN 10204 3.2 certification with third-party inspection?
A: Yes. While EN 10204 3.1 is standard, we can arrange 3.2 certification with inspection witnessed by Lloyd's Register, TÜV, SGS, or Bureau Veritas. Please specify this requirement when requesting quotation, as it requires scheduling during production.
Q7: What is the minimum order quantity for S275JR laser-cut parts?
A: We have no strict MOQ. Single-piece prototypes and small trial orders are accepted. Volume pricing tiers typically begin at 500 kg per part number, with optimal per-kilogram pricing achieved at full-sheet nesting quantities or container-load volumes.
Q8: Can you cut metric and imperial hole patterns, including slotted holes for structural connections?
A: Yes. Our CNC programming accepts both metric and imperial dimensions. We routinely cut standard structural bolt holes (e.g., M20, M24, 3/4", 7/8"), slotted holes for adjustable connections, and countersinks for flush bolt heads. Please specify hole tolerances and edge distances in your drawings.
