Q: How does C276 compare to 316L or 904L stainless steel?
A: C276 outperforms both 316L and 904L in aggressive chemical environments containing chlorides, oxidizing acids, and mixed acid solutions. While 316L is suitable for mild chemical and marine exposure, and 904L handles moderate sulfuric acid, C276 is required for hot concentrated acids, wet chlorine, and severe chloride environments. The cost reflects this premium performance.
Q: Can C276 parts be welded during fabrication?
A: Yes. C276 exhibits excellent weldability and can be joined by GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), and SMAW processes using ERNiCrMo-4 filler metal. It requires no preheat and generally needs no post-weld heat treatment to restore corrosion resistance, which is a major advantage over many stainless steels. Interpass temperature should be kept below 150°C.
Q: Is C276 magnetic?
A: C276 is austenitic and essentially non-magnetic in the solution-annealed condition. Minor magnetic response may appear in heavily cold-worked areas, but this is negligible for most applications.
