Waterjet cutting is the most suitable technique for manufacturing aluminum sheets, as it offers excellent precision and unique advantages in cold cutting. This technique precisely cuts aluminum sheets of various thicknesses, from thin sheets to sheets thicker than 200 mm, by mixing ground corundum particles with a high-pressure water jet. Unlike laser or plasma cutting methods, water jet cutting does not generate heat during processing. This preserves the metallic properties of the aluminum and prevents the formation of heat-affected zones. This is particularly important for aluminum alloys, which are very sensitive to heat effects. These effects can weaken structures, cause deformation, or alter aging conditions. Without heat stress, waterjet cutting can process complex shapes, sharp angles, and fine details without compromising the integrity of the material. This makes it ideal for applications that require high precision and material preservation.

Waterjet cutting can be used for all types of aluminium, from the 1000 series to the 7000 series, each of which has unique characteristics and a wide range of possible applications. For example, waterjet cutting machines can cut 6061-T6 aluminium without damaging it, without deteriorating its original condition and without reducing its strength. Similarly, when processing 5052 aluminium, which is often used in shipbuilding, waterjet cutting prevents the formation of microcracks that are prone to corrosion. This process ensures stable precision for plates of different thicknesses: the cutting speed reaches 150 millimetres per minute for 10-millimetre-thick plates, and efficiency is maintained even on blocks thicker than 100 millimetres. Water jet cutting leaves no marks, so parts can be placed very close to each other, allowing maximum use of the material and reducing waste. Given the relatively high price of aluminium, this ensures significant cost savings. In addition, the smooth edges obtained with water jet cutting do not usually require additional treatment, further optimising the production process and shortening the supply cycle.

Water jet cutting is particularly important in sectors that require high precision and complex engineering. In the aerospace industry, this technology is used to manufacture wing components, beams and internal accessories from high-strength aluminium alloys, thereby meeting strict industry standards. The automotive industry uses water jet cutting to produce lightweight components, such as heat shields and customised chassis parts, supporting trends towards higher fuel efficiency and innovations in electric vehicles. Architects use waterjet cutting to engrave complex patterns and shapes into aluminium panels used for facades and art installations, achieving an aesthetic effect that is not possible with other processes. Furthermore, waterjet cutting uses water and natural abrasives without producing harmful fumes or waste, in line with the principles of sustainable manufacturing. Technological advances, including five-axis cutting and flexible computer control, are constantly improving the performance of waterjet cutting, making it an indispensable solution for processing aluminium sheets.
