The production process of patterned boards consists of the following main steps:
Unwinding: unrolling the raw material rolls in preparation for the subsequent process.
Welding: Welding the front and rear rolls of material to ensure continuous production.
Pickling: removing oxidised skin and rust from the steel surface.
Hot or cold rolling: The rolling process is used to form the desired pattern and thickness.
Galvanised (optional): some of the patterned sheets are galvanised to improve corrosion resistance.
Straightening: The strip is straightened by means of a straightening machine.
Slitting & Coiling: The steel sheet is slit into different sizes as per requirement and coiled into rolls.
Performance Characteristics:
Anti-slip performance: the pattern design on the surface of the patterned board makes it have excellent anti-slip performance, especially suitable for wet or oily environment.
Aesthetics: The pattern design of the pattern plate is diverse, including diamond, lentil, round bean shape, etc., which has a better decorative effect.
Strengthening performance: the pattern structure of the pattern plate can enhance the pressure and bending resistance of the steel plate.
Material saving: under the premise of meeting the usage requirements, the pattern plate can reduce the usage of steel.
Q: What is the difference between checkered plate and plain Q235 sheet with an anti-slip coating applied afterward?
A: Checkered plate has the raised pattern forged into the steel during rolling, making it a permanent, integral feature that cannot wear off. Applied anti-slip coatings—such as epoxy grit tapes or paint aggregates—can degrade, peel, or wear smooth over time, requiring maintenance or replacement. Checkered plate is the preferred solution for heavy-traffic and industrial environments.
Q: Does the raised pattern reduce the load-bearing capacity compared to a flat plate of the same nominal thickness?
A: The nominal thickness of checkered plate refers to the base sheet thickness excluding the pattern. The pattern adds minimal structural depth and is not included in engineering calculations for bending or shear. When designing supports, use the base thickness (e.g., 6 mm) for load calculations, not the overall thickness including projections. The pattern's primary function is traction, not structural reinforcement.
Q: Which pattern offers the best slip resistance: lentil, diamond, or round?
A: Diamond (rhombus) patterns generally provide the most aggressive traction due to their sharp edges and high peak-to-valley ratio, making them ideal for oily industrial floors and steep ramps. Lentil (durbar) patterns offer a balanced combination of grip and walking comfort, suitable for most general platforms and stairways. Round button patterns are less aggressive and are typically chosen for aesthetic or light-duty applications.
Q: Can Q235 checkered plate be used outdoors without any surface treatment?
A: In dry indoor environments, untreated mill-finish checkered plate performs adequately. However, for outdoor or humid indoor use, rust will form on the exposed steel surface and within the pattern recesses. For longevity, we recommend hot-dip galvanizing or applying a protective paint system. Galvanizing also fills the pattern valleys, which can slightly reduce slip resistance but provides superior corrosion protection.
