Q: Why is titanium stabilization important for laser-cut and welded parts?
A: Titanium acts as a strong carbide former, preferentially combining with carbon to prevent chromium depletion at grain boundaries. This eliminates sensitization and intergranular corrosion risk in the heat-affected zones of welds and near laser-cut edges. For parts that will operate in or be exposed to the 425–860°C sensitization range, titanium stabilization is essential.
Q: Is post-weld heat treatment required for 321H fabricated parts?
A: In most cases, post-weld heat treatment is not required for 321H due to its inherent resistance to weld decay. However, for critical pressure vessel applications or when specified by design codes (ASME VIII, EN 13445), stress relieving at 850–900°C may be performed. Solution annealing is generally unnecessary and can actually reduce creep resistance by redissolving beneficial carbides.
Q: Can you machine 321H to tight tolerances after laser cutting?
A: Absolutely. Our CNC machining centers achieve tolerances of ±0.01mm on critical features. We frequently combine laser rough cutting with precision finish machining for bearing seats, seal grooves, and threaded interfaces where laser tolerance alone is insufficient.
